This unit explored political and economic expressions of liberalism. The unit also examined how political and economic systems reflect the values of liberalism and the will of the people.

You have learned that liberal ideas originated from individuals that shared their ideas on change and how change could occur. Different countries interpret liberal ideas in many different ways. Each country’s ideology determines the amount of liberal ideas that are introduced. Aboriginal groups in Canada had liberal ideologies in place long before Europeans adopted liberalism. Today, liberalism has spread to many countries around the world. Canada’s liberal political system is based on principles adopted by Great Britain. Canada’s democratic system is also based on responsible and representative government. Canadians elect to Parliament the people they believe will best represent the will of the people.

The United States’ capitalist economic system embraces the values of liberalism. Americans have adopted a more laissez-faire approach and allow individuals to make the most important economic decisions. Canada’s mixed economy embraces the values of liberalism by promoting a more collective approach to the well-being of Canadians. Through a series of social programs and government intervention, the Canadian government has made Canada one of the healthiest and safest places to live in the world.
