Writing Assignment - Position Paper Intro

Introduction

In this assignment, you will write THE INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH ONLY for a position paper; the second of two writing tasks we need for this course.

• Assignment II requires students to demonstrate the skills of analysis, evaluation, and synthesis in response to a written source. 
• Students will be presented with a written source that they must analyze to demonstrate an understanding of the perspective(s) reflected in the source.
• The position paper requires students to argue a position taken in response to a question regarding the perspective(s) reflected in the source. 

This is NOT a research paper or an opinion paper on the good or bad of Liberalism. It is about the Perspective on Liberalism in the Source. A position paper asks us to take a position on a topic, issue, source, or perspective, and back it up with arguments and evidence. Arguments and Evidence are often confused as the same things.  Arguments are the why we should believe you, and evidence is the example of the why. 

Instructions

Analyze the following source and complete the assignment. 

Write THE INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH for an essay in which you:

• analyze the source to demonstrate an understanding of the ideological perspective(s) reflected in the source. 
• establish and argue a position in response to the question presented
• support your position and arguments by using evidence from your knowledge and understanding of Social Studies

Writing Instructions

It is strongly recommended that you do not complete this assignment unless you have attended your teacher's online session on this topic or watched the recording. Your teacher will guide you through the process of how to write this assignment and what criteria you need to meet.

1. You will write your response in a Word doc or Google doc.
2. You may wish to use one of these suggested templates to organize your introductory paragraph **You will need to submit a planner with your introductory paragraph.

Grading

This submission will not be graded however you will receive feedback from your teacher. It's expected that you will use this feedback to shape your final assignment (in Unit 4) which will be graded.

When your final response (in Unit 4) is evaluated, it will be marked using the rubric below which will be attached to that assignment folder.

This assignment should be submitted as one file. To do this:

1. Go to Assignments on the navbar
2. Click on the Assignment folder titled "Writing Assignment - Position Paper Introduction and Planning"
3. Add your file AND the file for your planner then click Submit
